We are not the best “phone” people, I can admit that honestly. Half of the time we aren’t sure where our home phone is, if it’s charged, or if it even has a dial tone. Sad, I know. We rely on our cell phones and iPads almost exclusively, and that also goes for keeping connected with family, near and far. Social media is great for helping family keep tabs on what you’re doing, where you are, and the like. But it doesn’t replace the conversations or the laughter, or the simple nights spent reading bedtime stories and playing checkers.
Enter the brilliance of HomeTeam™, a new app created by Panasonic that keeps families connected no matter the gap of time and distance. We were extremely fortunate to try out this service and the kids were on cloud 9. My kids only last so long on a phone call, even when they get to “see” the other person on the phone line. But with HomeTeam the kids had a chance to read books and play games with their grandparents, no more staring at the screen trying to figure out what to talk about next. Instead, they are actually doing real life activities that they would engage in if they were face-to-face.
Did you know over half of grandparents in the United States live more than 100 miles from their grandchildren? My children have one set of grandparents close by and one set far away. The once or twice yearly visits make it difficult for them to pick up where they left off last time. And this service can bridge that gap for families in similar situations.
It’s not just for chatting, but you can read a book together! The pages appear on the screen, and all the while you still get to video chat with your family member as you take turns reading and turning pages. Not just books, but there’s games you can play together as well. As you can see the kids were more than thrilled to try this new service out. Checkers was a favorite, along with the story choices. But there’s even more, they have games using math skills, logic, science, and vocabulary.
HomeTeam will be available for download in the App Store and Google Play on 3/24.
