A Day at the Farm

Last Saturday we had a wonderful family date planned for our annual apple picking adventure. If you follow along on Instagram (@mylifeatplaytime) you've seen a whole lot of apples, pears and pumpkins recently. This is because we hit the jackpot on our trip to Riley's Farm. We go each year to pick apples, pears, pumpkins, and make fresh pressed cider. I can't say enough good things about it. From my research it's the closest apple orchard farm from Los Angeles where you can pick your own fruit. You can go north to Santa Ynez, east to Oak Glen (which is where we go), or south to Julian. I recommend you go early, since it's over an hour drive to get there, we pack our lunch and bring picnic blankets. We leave it all in the car until we decide to find a shady spot for lunch, and this year we brought a football to toss around too. If you want to make fresh pressed cider I recommend buying your ticket in the General Store first thing since they sell only so many each day. This year we picked Braeburn, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Russet and Honey Crisp. But let me tell you those Granny Smith orchards were looking amazing! We were so bummed they weren't ready for picking just yet.

Here's some snapshots from our day...

The kids are pretty anxious to roast the pumpkin seeds once we slice into these guys, and we've had fresh pears and apples with every single meal. Last night I made my first apple tart. I mean very first, of my whole entire life! See, you can learn new things at the ripe old age of 33. Everyone at the PTA meeting this morning thought it was delish, so I'm going to put that one in the rotation. Hope if you live near an orchard you can make a date for your own apple picking adventure!
