downtown los angeles date

Since last year when all of our kids began school full day, we decided early in the school year that we would have an annual date, just Aaron and I. A "Kids are Back to School" date for ourselves. Last year we grabbed coffee, saw a movie and had lunch. This year's date was a little more adventurous.

Aaron decided to explore Downtown Los Angeles for the day, and he didn't have to talk me into it. Aaron worked downtown for years, but it's not a place I venture to very often. Needless to say I was game for anything!

We started out at Handsome Coffee Roasters. Let me just tell you they take their coffee brewing quite seriously. When I asked for my latte to be decaf, the look I got was not too thrilling. In fact, they don't even HAVE decaf! It was right up Aaron's alley however, he's a bit of an espresso snob. Not to mention the potato taco cart right outside the coffee shop, Aaron was in heaven.

Next we headed to a spot for me. I had looked up a few vintage stores the day before and had all their addresses on a notepad. First stop was Shareen Vintage. Even though we had the address, when the entrance looks like this, and it's in the back of the building, it makes it a bit hard to find.

Be warned, normally no boys are allowed inside the warehouse. They have no changing rooms so you just strip down right in the open. But since we were the only customers there, they let Aaron come inside and hang out. This could be called my happy place. Oh the treasures inside! It wasn't cheap, but it was outrageous either. Their selection was unbelievable! I fell inlove with about 10 pieces but managed to only bring 4 home. That's progress people, progress...

We went to a few other vintage shops, but they were sadly disappointing. Next stop was lunch at Yang Chow's for the absolute best soup in all the land, Spicy Szechuan Wonton Soup, be prepared, when they say spicy, it's no joke.

And no visit downtown would be complete without a treat from Bottega Louie. The macaroons are amazing, preferably the Salted Caramel, but the Coffee and Earl Grey were very close runners up.
